The Flat Wagon is a brand-new design inspired by the classic well wagon, built with hobbyists in mind. It features a lowered central section, making it ideal as a simple flatbed or as a base for adding your own seat or passenger footrest area. The chassis is made from 6 mm laser-cut steel for the main frame and 3 mm steel for the central section, giving a strong yet compact design that sits as low as possible for excellent stability on the track.
Measuring 812 mm over the buffer beams, the Flat Wagon is designed to suit both 3 1/2" and 5" gauge track, depending on your chosen wheel size. Its compatible with 3 1/2" or 4" diameter wheels available from SMR Engineerings 5" gauge wheel range
. The smaller wheels provide around 5 mm clearance above the rail, while the larger ones offer about 15 mm, giving you the option to fine-tune the ride height.
The wagon runs smoothly on 6900-2RS ball bearings (10 x 22 x 6 mm) easy to source and reliable in use and has no suspension, keeping things simple and sturdy. The bolt-together construction makes it easy to assemble or take apart, with just 12 laser-cut parts, including 8 bearing retainers.
Whether you are building a basic wagon for general use or planning to add your own seating, this is a great starting point for any workshop. Its available either as downloadable plans if you want to make it yourself, or as a ready-to-assemble laser cut kit for a quick, clean build. Strong, stable, and easy to customise , the Flat Wagon is a perfect all round chassis for the model engineering enthusiast.
